NewJeans Responds to 1 Billion KRW Fine Ruling: “Only Temporary Until Appeal Is Resolved”

On May 30, amid intensifying legal battles with agency ADOR, NewJeans‘ legal representatives clarified that the court’s indirect enforcement ruling is not permanent.
“The indirect enforcement ruling issued today is based on the original provisional injunction from March 21. It is a separate matter from the ongoing appeal against that injunction. The appeal is still under review by the court,” the statement read.

“This decision is temporary and only valid until a ruling is made on the injunction appeal. If the NewJeans members win the appeal, both the injunction and the enforcement order will be void.”
The clarification follows a ruling earlier in the day by the 52nd Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court, which granted ADOR’s request for indirect enforcement. The court ordered that each NewJeans member must pay ₩1 billion KRW per violation of the March injunction, potentially 5 billion KRW if the group acts collectively.

The court stated that NewJeans had already violated the injunction by allegedly preparing for overseas concerts and releasing new music under the name “NJZ,” suggesting a high risk of further non-compliance.
The dispute stems from an ongoing legal battle over the validity of NewJeans’ exclusive contracts with ADOR. During the first hearing, NewJeans’ legal team signaled no intent to settle, while ADOR’s lawyers stated they were open to negotiation. The second hearing is scheduled for June 5.
